At least 28 people were injured, some of them severely and critically after a man crashed his car into a crowd of people in the German city of Munich.
“It is probably an attack”Bavaria Prime Minister Marcus Zoder told reporters.
The driver has surrounded a police car guarding a union demonstration and has accelerated in the crowd, local authorities say.
Islamist
At the scene of the incident was detained 24-year-old Afghana asylum seeker who is identified as a suspect, the police confirmed.
The suspect was previously known to police in connection with drugs and theft incidents, said Bavarian interior minister.
The suspect probably posted an Islamist publication on social networks Shortly before the incident, DPA reported.
So far, the authorities have no confirmation that the incident has a relationship with the Munich Security Conference, which begins on Friday.
In the Bavarian capital later, US Vice President Jay Di Vance and Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski arrive today, Reuters notes.
At the moment at the Consulate General of Bulgaria in Munich, no signals were received for injured Bulgarian citizens in the incident, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.
“Maximum rigor”
The suspect of Afghan must be punished with all the rigor of the law and then be expulsioned by Germany, The German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said
German Interior Minister Nancy Fezer also called for a firm reaction.
“Again, the alleged perpetrator is a young man from Afghanistan,” The GSDP spokeswoman said.
“And the only answer may be: the state based on the rule of law must show maximum rigor.”
The German government has “tightened” the laws for the deportation of the perpetrators of violent crimes to allow more deportations, she stressed. Now these laws must be applied in a consistent manner.
“As the only country in Europe to again deportations to Afghanistan, despite the Taliban reign and we will continue to do so,” Add Fezer.
“Now it is about saving lives and clarifying all circumstances.”
“We hope and pray that the victims and seriously wounded will be able to recover. Thanks to the police forces for their rapid and decisive intervention, which prevented even worse consequences,” The interior minister pointed out.
