Bathers struck by lightning on a beach on the SP coast
⛈️In 10 years, from 2013 to 2022, 835 people died in Brazil due to electrical discharges, according to the Atmospheric Electricity Group (Elat), of the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe). The typical intensity of lightning is 20,000 A, about a thousand times the intensity of an electric shower.
☀️Most deaths occur during the summer – a period in which high temperatures and air humidity favor the formation of thunderstorms and lightning.
🚨Os lightning can occur just before it starts to rain or in the final phase of the storm. According to Inpe, people should seek shelter as soon as they see heavy clouds in the sky or hear thunder. When the rain stops, avoid immediately going to open places or in the presence of water.
➡️ Know what to do if you are on the beach at risk of storms:
- Leave the sea immediately;
- Do not walk along the shoreline on the sandbar or promenade;
- Stay away from metal structuresthat is, do not stand under umbrellas, tents and kiosks;
- Do not stop near moored boats;
- Do not carry out fishing activities while sailing on boats or on the seashore;
➡️See the safer options take cover:
- Enter homes or buildings keeping away from electrical, telephone and plumbing networks, metal doors and windows;
- Get into a non-convertible vehicle and close the doors and windows, avoiding contact with the bodywork;
- Enter underground shelters, such as subways or tunnels.
In outdoor places, in the last case, if there is no safe shelter nearby, guidance from the Atmospheric Electricity Group (Elat) is to hunker down and keep your feet together until the storm passes. Don’t lie down.
Increased incidence of lightning in Brazil
According to INPE, the incidence of lightning in Brazil has increased in recent years. The formation of lightning is associated with thunderstorms, which are becoming increasingly frequent due to climate change.
Look at the number of electrical discharges in recent years:
- 2021: 154.036.786
- 2022: 191.419.672
- 2023/January-November: 208.906.173
