Torn knee ligaments in the fall meant a major layoff for his professional career (and big problems for the rest), leaving a deeply unhappy employer. This event forced owners of professional teams to include clauses in athletes’ contracts that quite subtly and precisely limit their opportunities outside of sports, in order to reduce the possibility of potential injuries. For example, the National Basketball Association (NBA) standard contract prohibits players from boxing, combat sports, skating, mopeds, motorcycles, participating in auto races, skydiving, or hang gliding.
And it is not for nothing that there are precedents confirming why such activities should be avoided.
