Journals help our health in many ways. [사진=게티이미지]Writing in a journal is one of the most common New Year’s resolutions. This is because it is widely known to be useful not only for personal development but also for time management. Experts point out that writing a diary has a positive effect not only on self-management but also on health. This is because it has already been revealed through several studies that writing helps not only improve mental health but also strengthen the immune system by relieving stress.

British psychologist Julia Samuel said in a recent BBC interview: “When we write down our feelings, we can experience the same emotional release as when we talk about them. Journaling is as effective as talk therapy, and is a great way to control emotions , anxiety and stress”. It helps. “It also strengthens our immune system, makes us feel older and helps us solve problems.”

A research team at the State University of New York’s Stony Brook School of Medicine asked 107 patients with asthma or rheumatoid arthritis to write for 20 minutes each for three consecutive days.

71 people were asked to write about the most stressful event in their lives, while the remaining 36 were asked to describe their plans for that day. Subsequently, most of these patients showed objective improvement in symptoms, and patients who wrote about stress actually improved their symptoms more than other participants.

There is also a similar study conducted on 37 patients infected with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) at the University of Texas in the United States. A study was conducted on two groups: one group was asked to write about negative life experiences and the other was asked to write about their daily schedules.

In this study, people who wrote about their life experiences showed significant improvements in viral levels. “Writing can give structure and organization to those anxious feelings, which can help us overcome anxiety,” said James Pennebaker, a psychology professor at the University of Texas who participated in the study. He points out that anxiety can actually be reduced by concretizing vague anxiety and understanding it through writing.

Samuel said: “Writing can help us release our emotions and, in the process, has a calming effect as our emotions become clearer.”
