Documentary “Diary of a man adrift”

“Diary of a Man Adrift,” a documentary film directed by José Ibáñez and produced by filmmaker and academic at the Universidad Viña del Mar (UVM), Michel Toledo, will soon be released thanks to funding from the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage at the classic Cine Arte in the Viña del Mar commune.

The film follows José, a young Chilean filmmaker who watches from Argentina the dramatic events of the Maidan revolution in Ukraine between 2014 and 2015. Prompted by his virtual connection with a Ukrainian blogger, José decides to travel to Europe to meet her and capture images of the uprising. However, upon arrival he is confronted with an unexpected reality: the blogger has stopped responding and the conflict has moved to the border with Russia. Disoriented, José moves to Berlin, where he faces new personal and professional uncertainties as he witnesses the birth of a new social conflict, now in his own country.

Toledo previews passages from the story, indicating that “in 2019, the protagonist (José) once again becomes a distant witness, this time of the social revolution in Chile, which leads him to record the events from the perspective of an external observer. The film culminates in 2022 with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, forcing José to wonder whether he will continue to be a passive spectator or take a more active role in the story,” the producer said.

On the other hand, José Ibáñez, director of the film, added that “Diary of a Man Adrift” is a mirror of how history influences individual lives and how, in turn, personal decisions can impact the course of events. I hope that the film inspires viewers to reflect on their own role in society and in our collective and global history.”

The film had its national premiere at the Sanfic Film Festival and its international premiere at the Florianópolis Film Festival, where it has had a great reception. After the avant premiere, the film will be in theaters starting September 26 in selected movie theaters across the country.
