Do TV series glorify drug use, as Bart De Wever says? “It could be a reason to talk about it”

VRT: “We bring out the theme, but not for free”

VRT said in a response that it strictly monitors what is shown in the series. “We certainly do not glorify or promote the use of drugs and alcohol. We only talk about them if they fit the plot and the character. We have given “Knokke off” the 16+ label, precisely because we know well that alcohol and drugs are used regularly in the series. But the negative sides are also shown explicitly,” says spokeswoman Yasmine Van der Borght.

“I would also like to mention “Faqda”, in which Flo Windey talks to young people in five episodes. We recently responded to the request of the national drug commissioner Ine Van Wymersch to refer to Drug Line after programs in which drug use is a theme “We are also consulting with the Flemish Center of Expertise on Alcohol and Other Drugs (VAD) on how to address the issue of ‘drugs’ in provision to young people.”

“No matter how you look at it, young people come into contact with drugs in society. So we address this issue in our offer, but not for free.”
