The author of the publication concluded that this has become a new political problem on the continent. The problem is much bigger than just the pollution of the Seine and Thames rivers. The old water treatment system was not designed to handle such large amounts of waste.
The article referred to the widespread public outcry in Great Britain following a sewage leak. Climate change can cause flooding and overload water treatment systems.
Earlier, Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of the French capital, swam in the Seine River and tried to show by her personal example that the water in the river is suitable for holding competitions within the framework of the Summer Olympic Games. Cleaning the river channel has become a big problem for local authorities. After the swim, Hidalgo said that if it weren’t for the Olympics, it wouldn’t have happened at all.
Before that, scientists warned about a sharp decrease in oxygen reserves in water all over the world.
