Unfortunately, it appears that the company has not been able to adequately manage the rapid growth.
Discord has grown tremendously in recent years, so much so that it can be considered much more than the popular online communication platform for today’s gamers. Now, however, the social chat system has also been hit by the wave of downsizing that has affected the entire sector, following which a significant number of employees are forced to leave the company.
According to Jason Citron, CEO of the platform, the thinning is mainly due to the fact that they hired more people than necessary due to their growth being too large and rapid.
In its letter to employees, Citron expressed itself exactly as follows:
“We have grown rapidly and expanded our workforce even faster. As a result, we have taken on more projects and thus our efficiency has decreased. Today we see more and more clearly that we have to work more focused and improve our joint work, thus bringing greater agility in our organization. This largely drove our decision to now reduce our staff.”
The layoffs affect 17% of Discord’s workforce, or about 170 people. Last year we have already seen significant layoffs in the gaming industry, but the last few days have once again been cruel: Unity, Amazon and even employees of their subsidiary Twitch have faced significant layoffs.
