Dinosaur with 5 Meter Wide Wings. PHOTO/ DAILY
As reported by Science Alert, Inabtanin alarabia, had a wingspan of about 5 meters (16 feet). This fossil is very valuable because it is preserved in three dimensions, allowing researchers to study the internal structure of its bones.
Meanwhile, Arambourgiania philadelphiae. has a larger wingspan, about 10 meters (33 feet). The fossil is also very well preserved and provides important information about this giant pterosaur.
The discovery is special because pterosaur fossils are often found in flattened forms due to the fossil-forming process that compresses the hollow, fragile bones. However, the three-dimensional preservation allowed researchers to perform CT scans and study the bone structure in depth.
Research conducted on the fossils of Inabtanin alarabia revealed that its bone structure is similar to that of modern flapping birds, while the bone structure of Arambourgiania philadelphiae is more similar to that of vultures, which are known for their ability to soar and circle carcasses. These differences indicate different adaptations in the flight and lifestyle of pterosaurs.
The name Inabtanin alarabia is derived from the geographical location near the discovery site and refers to “tannin,” the Arabic word for dragon, which often appears in pterosaur etymology. The name pays homage to the Arabian Peninsula and reflects awe of these prehistoric creatures.
This discovery not only adds to our knowledge of pterosaurs but also provides a clearer picture of how these creatures lived and adapted in their now-extinct environment.
