Dill Pickle Chips – Rejoice in the news:

It’s almost time for the first and biggest grocery sale of the year, where more than a thousand new food products will hit stores.

We’ve already received a few drops, like the Erling Braut Haaland ice cream and Linnéa Myhre’s new Solo collaboration, which we expect will have a leg up – when they hit stores. There are still a few weeks to go, but some products have already hit store shelves.

The first new product we’ve had this year is also perhaps one of the most divisive: dill pickle-flavored chips.

Of course we had to taste.

Expensive cucumbers lead to threats

In short, dill pickles are a type of pickle. The cucumber is obviously pickled with dill, but roughly speaking it’s a saltier, more acidic variation of the type of pickle more common here at home. Dill pickles are also made with medium-sized cucumbers, often whole, preferably cut into sticks rather than slices.

If you want to delve deeper into pickle varieties, we can recommend Wikipedia for a decent overview, and the daily meal has a nice explanation of dill and pickles with bread and butter. The latter is the most common version in Norway.

Trendy or from the past

Pickles are the trend that never seems to end. Our Instagram and eventually TikTok feeds have been infested with pickles, and the paper they come in, since long before the pandemic.

Let’s mention in passing: Pickle juice, or pickle juice, has long been in the trend picture, in countless ways. Pickleslush, pickles, pickle martinis and pickle ice cream.

We should also never forget last year’s #hotpickle trend, which combines two strong trends (pun intended).

The editors went into this process knowing that it would be impossible to reach a consensus here. Because pickles are a classic love-hate food, though not as controversial as, say, cilantro or anchovies. Dill is also quite controversial, although not as markedly so.

This bag of chips courted the whole scale, there were as many gray areas here and as many opinions as there were people. It’s easy to agree on what we like, a little harder to agree on whether we like it.

The flakes are relatively small, thin and crunchy and have a slightly rustic appearance with some shells on the edge.

When we open the bag there is a clear smell of both dill and vinegar, and the first flavor that hits is that of dill. Not fussy when you think about it, but the flavor of dill right in the center of the slice.

It doesn’t take long for the pickle to take over. And that flavor sticks well: What starts out as dill pickles ends up becoming a real pickle party. There’s a lot of vinegar in here.

– I don’t like pickles, but I liked this one.

– Perhaps this is more suited to things than to itself?

The suggestion of putting these fries in a burger, for a little pickle flavor – and crunch – is quickly taken up. The same goes for chopping chips and using them as breading on fish.

We would also dip it in a good sour cream or yogurt sauce. Maybe a luxury variant with sour cream and eggs? You understand where we want to go.

Rolling the dice on this point is difficult, because there will be differing opinions here. Because while some people’s mouths water when they hear the word pickle, others just thinking about it makes them vomit.

If you identify primarily with the latter, stay away. But if you’re more indecisive, it could happen. Even many of those who weren’t so keen on the pickles ate until the bag was empty.

A somewhat controversial taste Many people want to eat it for something, rather than for themselves

We appreciate that the manufacturer tries something new and delivers what it promises. But not everything is true, perhaps above all because the vast majority thinks that this is better for something and not for themselves.

Provided that those who have fixed the dice roll like pickles, this comes on an honorable five.
