Wien Energie is laying fiber optic cables to Viennese schools and kindergartens – investment sum over 35 million euros – digitalization promotes equal opportunities
Vienna (OTS) – 150 Viennese schools and 350 kindergartens now have a broadband network and comprehensive WiFi coverage. The connection was carried out by Wien Energie and Wiener Netze on behalf of the Vienna Digital municipal department (MA01). The upgrade at schools and kindergartens enables super-fast internet use including a stable connection, which offers students access to online educational resources such as interactive learning programs, scientific databases and e-books. In this way, modern and multimedia education is supported and equal opportunities are also promoted through general access to knowledge. A further 140 primary schools are also set to receive comprehensive Wi-Fi coverage over the next three years.
“In the age of digitalization, it is crucial to make our educational institutions future-proof through fiber optic connections to Viennese schools and kindergartens. This enables children and young people to develop essential digital skills that are necessary for success in our digitally networked world. Thanks to the good cooperation with Wien Energie and Wiener Netze, the project was implemented quickly, with Vienna elementary schools following next“, says Peter Hanke, City Councilor for Economic Affairs and Vienna Public Utilities.
“It is important to create modern access to knowledge for our young generation in order to prepare them for the challenges of the future. In order to achieve this goal and strengthen digital education, access to fast internet is a basic requirement. A total of over 35 million euros was spent on this fiber optic expansion and upgrading to a comprehensive WLAN coverage. “In just four years, we were able to make high-speed Internet available to young Viennese in more than three quarters of the city’s schools and kindergartens,” says Michael Strebl, CEO of Wien Energie.
Fiber optic expansion continues to progress in Vienna’s schools
Since 1999, Wien Energie has been laying broadband together with Wiener Netze on behalf of MA01. Initially, fiber optic access was installed in individual school rooms, especially in vocational, technical, middle and special schools. From 2018 onwards, comprehensive WiFi coverage was also installed within the school buildings, enabling wireless internet use in all rooms using mobile phones, tablets or laptops. The new accesses allow the transmission of millions of bits per second, meaning many times more data can be sent and received. This makes digital work even more efficient. Students can discover, experiment and implement new learning tools and approaches that would not be possible without high-speed internet access. By 2027, 140 elementary schools in Vienna are to be equipped with comprehensive WiFi.
Fiber optic access at all Vienna hospitals and official buildings
Since 2012, all administrative buildings and hospitals in Vienna have been equipped with fiber optic access through Wien Energie and Wiener Netze. This technological infrastructure ensures efficient and fast communication and data transfer, which is crucial for administration and medical care. In this way, work processes can be optimized and the quality of service can be significantly increased in both the public sector and the healthcare sector.
Super-fast internet for private individuals
Wiener Energie is not only pushing forward the fiber optic expansion in schools, kindergartens and public buildings together with the Wiener Netze, but also in the area of private customers. As buildings are newly constructed or renovated, broadband connections are gradually being installed for residents. If you take out a SuperFast Internet tariff, you can surf unlimitedly at up to one gigabit per second, with the same upload and download.
