Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat Anmeldelse

We all know that there are many, many, many useless mobile versions of famous, great, iconic game titles that are basically just stupid, greedy money grabs rather than something worth playing. Doom has turned into a hopeless mobile game filled with microtransactions, just like Witcher, Elder Scrolls, Forza, and now Devil May Cry. Because this… It has very little to do with the original Capcom series. Dante should then be the only true common denominator. Dante plays the main role together with his two friends Vergil, Nero and Lady, and their mission is to kill demons. There’s no story to speak of here: as the player, you’re thrown straight into your first game, and most of what’s communicated via dialogue-driven cutscenes makes no sense.

The game mechanics mostly consist of single-tap button hammering. Dante leaps between fights and moves gracefully through the air as he executes his deadly attacks. The animations are beautiful, but it’s hopelessly monotonous. Unlike Capcom’s classic Devil May Cry games, there are no skill or education requirements for players here. No combinations are required. No evasive maneuvers. Just keep your index finger on the attack button like crazy and hit the demons without taking any damage.

Here everything is focused on microtransactions. It’s all about microtransactions. Peak of Combat is a super Japanese Gacha game that’s all about playing the game, collecting “Stamina” and taking out a lottery machine to see if you’ve won more “Stamina” to advance. In most cases, however, I win absolutely nothing, and each level completed gives me a Stamina point, which is half of what is often needed to progress through the game. So what does it take to advance? You guessed. Microtransactions. To play Peak of Combat as intended, you have to open your wallet, and while there are large amounts of stamina, the game is more interested in you as a player putting in small amounts per day, continuously. It’s a disgusting little project about which it’s very, very difficult to say anything positive.

The graphics, on the other hand, are quite decent. As mentioned, the animations are nice and the design is well done with the right Devil May Cry feel. The various demons and paths Dante moves through feel like they were lifted straight from the first Capcom game in this beloved series, and while the Gacha thing with 700,000 different progression systems and skill tree screens bores me beyond all reason, the presentation is elegant and executed from a design perspective.

Peak of Combat should actually be called “Peak of Greed” because it is easily one of the most disgusting pay-2-play games I’ve seen in the last decade.
