[메디컬투데이=이승재 기자] A blood test has been developed that can diagnose 18 types of early cancer.
Research findings showing that 18 types of cancer can be diagnosed early through a blood test have been published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ Oncology).
With the advancement of modern medicine, technology is emerging to diagnose cancer by measuring the amount of specific biological substances in the blood, called “biomarkers.” A representative biomarker is “prostate specific antigen (PSA)”, used to aid in the diagnosis of prostate cancer. Various types of “tumor antigens (CA)” are used in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, colon cancer, etc.
Researchers at the University of Washington recently developed a blood test that can diagnose 18 types of early-stage cancer.
They collected plasma from 440 cancer patients and 44 healthy adults and measured the concentrations of more than 3,000 proteins. As a result, 1010 gender-specific proteins were identified. Furthermore, thanks to the analysis of 150 biomarkers, it was possible to precisely identify the origin of cancer occurring in specific organs in more than 80% of cases.
The researchers said that the blood test developed in this way had the ability to detect all stage 1, 2 and 3 cancers, and that the accuracy was particularly high in early-stage cancer. For stage 1 cancer, diagnostic accuracy reached 93% in men and 84% in women.
Based on these results, the researchers concluded that the blood test was effective in the early detection of 18 types of cancer.
