Detect kidney disease early with intelligent eye scanning

By intelligently scanning an eye, the diagnosis of kidney disease can be made earlier. This is evident from research from the University of Edinburgh. Kidney disease is becoming more common, in part due to the growing number of people with diabetes and obesity.

With the growing number of patients with kidney disease and often late diagnosis with current methods, this finding offers hope for better early diagnosis of kidney disease and treatment of this growing health challenge. The research was recently published in the journal Nature Communications.

Detect early

One of the biggest challenges with kidney disease is that it often goes unnoticed in its early stages. With current diagnostic methods, the disease is often only discovered when half of the kidney function has already been lost, writes ICT&health.

The method for detecting kidney disease uses optical coherence tomography (OCT) to get a detailed view of the retina at the back of the eye. This allows you to observe important changes in the eye, which indicate the presence and progression of kidney disease. The study shows that patients with kidney disease had thinner retinas than people in the control group.
