The Minnesota Police arrested a suspect involved in the attack on two state legislators and put it in custody, according to several media, including CBS News, an American partner of the BBC.
This is Vance Luther Boelter, who was wanted by the authorities for the murder on Saturday of the Democratic state legislator Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark.
State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette managed to survive the attack.
In a Facebook publication, the Ramsey County Sheriff’s office published a photo of the suspect and said: «The face of evil. After a tireless and determined police work, the murderer is now in custody ».
“Thanks to the dedication of multiple agencies that work together and the support of the community, justice is one step closer,” he added.
Earlier this Sunday, the police reported having found a unemployed car linked to the suspect in Sibley County, about 80 kilometers from the crime scene.
The finding of the black sedan was notified to the mobile phones of local residents through a message that said: «Suspect not located. Keep the doors closed with key and insured vehicles ».
A cowboy hat, similar to the one that Boelter, 57, was found, was found near.
Police also reported on Sunday that Boelter’s wife was arrested in a traffic control along with three relatives in a car in the city of Onamia, more than 160 kilometers from the family home in the rural community of Green isle, on Saturday morning.
Jenny Boelter was released without being arrested for her cooperation, according to Drew Evans, of the Minnesota Criminal Detention Office, at a press conference on Sunday night.
The investigators claim that Boelter was disguised as a policeman when he perpetrated the attacks and had a vehicle that looked like a patrol car, equipped with flashing emergency lights.
The attacker first shot the Hoffman at his home in Champlin around 2:00 local time (7:00 GMT) on Saturday, authorities reported.
Shortly after, Hortman and her husband, Mark, were shot dead at their home in Brooklyn Park, 13 kilometers away.
The agents arrived at the house of the Hortman and exchanged shots with the suspect around 3:35 local time.
The suspect managed to flee, leaving his car behind, according to the authorities.
According to Boelter’s curriculum, he has experience in military security and training, and was also a shepherd.
“We are very lucky to be alive”
Yvette Hoffman said she and her husband were “very lucky to be alive” after receiving 17 bullet impacts.
John E Yvette Hoffman were shot dead at home at dawn on Saturday, but survived.
Yvette Hoffman declared that she and her husband, John, were “devastated” by the death of the Hortman.
The suspect, Vance Luther Boelter, wore a latex mask and passed an agent to shoot the victims in their homes in the Minneapolis suburbs, before escaping on foot.
Hoffman’s statement was shared on Instagram by Minnesota Amy Klobuchar.
“John is being subjected to many surgeries and every hour is closer to being out of danger,” Hoffman wrote.
«He received 9 bullet impacts. I received 8 and we are both lucky to be alive, ”he said.
«We are destroyed and devastated by the loss of Melissa and Mark. We have no words. There is never a place for this type of political hatred, ”he added.
A Facebook post of someone who identified himself as Hoffman’s nephew said she had launched her daughter during the murder attempt, “using her body as a shield to save her life.”
According to the Minnesota Star Tribune, the daughter, Hope, is twenty -seventh and was born with Espina Bifida, which, according to his father, motivated him to get involved in state policy.
The city of Brooklyn Park remained silent on Sunday morning while the neighborhood faced an alleged political murder on its doors.
A police car was parked in front of the Hortman’s house and a bright yellow caution tape surrounded the property.
Taha Abuisnaineh, who lives on the other side of the street, said he and his wife knew the family for more than 20 years.
“They were very good neighbors in a very quiet neighborhood,” he told the BBC. «No police activity are seen in this neighborhood. We are very shocked ».
Two other close residents who asked not to be identified said the suburban community was shocked.
“My neighbor next door listened to the shots,” said one. “We have been sending text messages.”
She and her husband described how they received an annual Christmas card from the Hortman.
“What a great loss for Minnesota,” he said.
In Sibley County, where the suspect’s car was found, local resident Brian Liebhard also told the BBC his shock.
“You have to catch this guy,” he said. «I do not agree with everything they vote [los dos políticos]but this is sad: the guy went crazy.
