Denmark is also under snow, but experiences another level: snow thunders

Heavy snow and strong winds caused chaos and traffic gridlock in southern Scandinavia on Wednesday. Bus traffic was blocked in several cities in southeastern Norway on Wednesday morning, including the capital Oslo, Norwegian news agency NTB reported. Several schools in the region also remained closed and air traffic at Oslo Airport was temporarily suspended in the early afternoon.

But the country is not only affected by snow and wind: thunder and lightning are also part of the weather system, while snow falls. In Jutland, more than 50 lightning strikes were recorded during heavy snowfall. This extremely rare weather phenomenon is called thundersnow. The phenomenon is so rare that there isn’t even a Danish name for it.

In Sweden the weather conditions led to a partial interruption of rail traffic. Numerous road accidents have also been reported on motorways. At Gothenburg airport, a plane from the Dutch airline KLM skidded off the runway during take-off and was stuck in the snow. Finally, in Denmark, police asked motorists in the East Jutland region to avoid unnecessary travel.

The bridge over the Kleine Belt, one of the country’s straits, was also closed to car traffic for several hours due to an accident.
