Tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered in the evening of June 17 in front of Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, calling for early elections and reaching an agreement with the Palestinian radical movement Hamas on the release of hostages held in Gaza.
The Times of Israel reports that 3 people were injured during clashes with law enforcement officers.
Later, many of the protesters moved to the residence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in East Jerusalem. Some of them tried to pass over the fences erected by the law enforcement officers and break into Netanyahu’s residence. According to the police, at least 9 people were arrested. A water cannon was used against the protesters.
The organizers of the demonstration accused the police of using excessive force. 3 persons injured during the clashes were hospitalized.
Netanyahu has repeatedly said that early elections should not be held in the country as long as there is a war in the Gaza Strip. The next general elections in Israel should be held in 2026. in October.
In 2023 on October 7, as a result of the Hamas attack, 1,200 people were killed in Israel, and around 250 people were captured. Some of them were returned during the one-week ceasefire established in November.
According to the authorities of the Gaza Strip, more than 37,000 Palestinians were killed during the Israeli retaliatory military operations.
