Jakarta –
Israel plans to send goods via India via the United Arab Emirates (UAE), following attacks by Houthi militias on commercial vessels suspected of being affiliated with that country in the Red Sea.
This information was revealed on Monday (22/1) by Israel’s Minister of Transportation, Miri Regev, on the social media site X, formerly known as Twitter.
“We have formed a team of professionals to enable the transportation of goods by land from Abu Dhabi to Israel,” said Regev, quoted by Middle Eastern Monitor, written on Tuesday (1/23/2024).
Regev believes that transporting goods by land will reduce logistics travel times by approximately 12 days compared to sea routes. This will reduce waiting times for ships due to Houthi militia attacks.
“We will do it and we will succeed,” he stressed. However, UAE authorities did not comment when confirming Regev’s statement.
As is known, geopolitical tensions are reportedly increasing in the Red Sea. The reason is that the Houthi militia has carried out attacks against various commercial shipping companies suspected of having ties to Israel.
The Houthi militia said the attack was carried out to pressure Israel to stop attacks on the Gaza Strip. These attacks are known to have killed more than 25,295 people since the conflict between Hamas and Israel erupted on October 7, 2023.
In recent days, US and British troops have carried out attacks against the Houthi militia in Yemen in retaliation.
There are fears that this conflict will cause inflation and disruption of global supply chains. This is because the Red Sea is one of the most often used shipping routes to send oil and fuel.
The Red Sea is used as a transit point between the Suez Canal in Egypt and the Gulf of Aden. The war that erupted in the region meant that several ships had to avoid and take a tortuous route through the southern part of Africa, which effectively increased logistical costs.
