It was decided to continue the detention of 17-year-old Timur Cihantimur, who fled to the USA after a fatal traffic accident in Istanbul and was captured in Boston upon Turkey’s extradition request, during his trial regarding the extradition process.
At the hearing held at Boston John Joseph Moakley Courthouse, judge Donald Cabell ruled that Cihantimur be detained throughout the extradition process. Cihantimur’s lawyers, who appeared before the judge for the second time, claimed that the conditions of the juvenile detention center in Connecticut, where their client was held, were not appropriate, and requested that Cihantimur be kept under surveillance at home first, and if this did not happen, he be transferred to a more suitable place in Massachusetts.
DETENTION WILL CONTINUE
The prosecutor, on the other hand, opposed home surveillance, stating that Cihantimur was a risk of escape, and insisted that the conditions of the reformatory where he is currently located were suitable for him. At the end of the hearing, which lasted about an hour, Judge Cabell decided to continue Cihantimur’s detention, stating that a lot of information was shared in the theses of both sides and that he needed time to evaluate it.
EYLEM TOK AND HIS SON TİMUR CİHANTİMUR WERE CAUGHT IN THE USA
Timur Cihantimur, who was kidnapped first to Egypt and then to the USA by his mother Eylem Tok after the accident in Istanbul, was caught in Boston with his mother on June 14. It was decided that the mother and son, who were brought before the judge separately on June 18, would continue to be detained due to the risk of escape. Cihantimur’s lawyer, who appeared before the judge on charges of “involuntary manslaughter and injury” regarding the accident in question, conveyed to the court his request to change his client’s place because he was not satisfied with the conditions in the reformatory where he was kept, and the court moved the date of the second hearing by one week and set the date for today.
ACCIDENT IN EYÜPSULTAN
On March 1, one of the 3 ATV vehicles traveling in Eyüpsultan broke down. While trying to repair the faulty vehicle pulled to the side of the road, one of the two vehicles traveling in the same direction crashed into the 3 ATVs there, and Oğuz Murat Aci, one of the 5 injured people, lost his life. It was determined that 17-year-old driver Timur Cihantimur, who caused the accident, left with his mother Eylem Tok’s vehicle, who came to the scene of the accident, and went to Egypt and then to the USA with his mother. The provisional arrest request document for the extradition of the suspects was forwarded to the US authorities by the Ministry of Justice.
