SAN FRANCISCO. A federal agency on Friday ordered a recall of toys sold on Walmart.com that contained powerful magnetic balls that could pose a danger to children if swallowed.
The Consumer Safety Product Commission (CSPC) said the balls, 5 millimeters (0.2 inches) in diameter, exceed federal standards for magnetic strength and could clump together and block parts of the digestive system if ingested.
According to the Commission, no injuries have been reported resulting from the use of this particular product, called the Relax 5mm Science Kit. It contained 216 small, multi-colored magnetic spheres with what the CPSC called a “strong magnetic flux.”

According to the agency, ingested magnets could stick to each other or to other metal objects, causing punctures, twisting and/or intestinal blockages, infections, blood poisoning and death.
The CPSC estimates that 2,400 magnet ingestions were treated in hospital emergency rooms between 2017 and 2021, and said the agency is aware of seven deaths linked to dangerous magnet ingestions, including two outside of United States.
The magnetic kit was sold on Walmart.com by Joybuy Marketplace Express, a unit of Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com. As of mid-afternoon ET, the kits were no longer visible on Walmart.com.
