Dangerous disease: more than 31 million people… – 2024-03-21 01:17:49

As the new variant of Covid-19, EG.5, has spread around the world, so has the concern about sepsis, a result of the body’s uncontrolled defense against infection. If 8 million people die of sepsis every year in the world, 60 percent of those diagnosed in Turkey die.

Publika.az “Haber Global” reports that the Eris variant, which has the scientific name EG.5.1, has increased in European countries, especially in America, and has caused great concern. Sepsis, popularly known as “blood poisoning,” occurs when the body’s own tissues and organs are damaged as a result of an uncontrolled defense response to an infection. Although sepsis causes tissue damage and organ failure, it kills millions of people every year. It is estimated that 31,500,000 people worldwide develop sepsis every year, and approximately 8 million of these patients die. An average of 60 percent of patients diagnosed with sepsis in Turkey die.

According to recent studies, while 49 percent of Germans and 44 percent of Americans know what this disease is, the level of awareness in Turkey is only 11 percent.

Ankara University Faculty of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation and teacher of Reanimation Department, Prof. Dr. Necmettin Ünal said that thousands of people die every year due to lack of knowledge about sepsis in Turkey.

“More than 1 billion people have had Covid-19 in 4 years. The total number of deaths is about 7 million. A quarter of these deaths were due to sepsis. “It’s a neglected topic, but sepsis is the number one factor in hospital deaths and hospital costs.”

Turkish Thoracic Association Central Board Member, Prof. Dr. He pointed out that sepsis, which affects about 50 million people in the world and causes the death of about 11 million people every year, causes a loss of life every 3 seconds:

“High fever, chills, altered consciousness, shortness of breath, low blood pressure, increased pulse rate and breathing rate, feeling unwell and worsening general condition are signs of sepsis. People with these symptoms should go to the nearest emergency room immediately.”

On the other hand, according to the most recently published data, 76 percent of patients hospitalized in intensive care units due to Covid-19 developed sepsis, and more than a third of patients died due to sepsis.
