Customs catch travelers with red panda, snakes and parrots in luggage

In Thailand, police arrested six Indians who attempted to smuggle dozens of wild animals onto a plane.

At Suvarnabhumi International Airport, Bangkok’s main airport, customs officers found as many as 87 animals in several checked suitcases on Monday. The suspects tried to take dozens of monitor lizards and snakes and several parrots to Mumbai.

A photo released by customs also shows a red panda, an endangered species, in a wicker basket. Other photos show snakes were kept in cloth bags, while a parrot was kept in a plastic container.

The animals were seized and the six suspects face a maximum prison sentence of ten years and a heavy fine.
