Cuba’s Comptroller General is dismissed after 14 years in office

SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- This Friday, during the third session of the National Assembly in its tenth legislature, the Comptroller General of Cuba Gladys Bejerano was removed from her position, after 14 years in office.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez proposed Mirian Marbán González, 50, who served as first deputy comptroller, in her place.

In his speech, Díaz-Canel unexpectedly said that the decision had been made after the “analysis of the political bureau” of the Cuban Communist Party. Thus, they decided to replace Bejerano as part of the “natural process of renewal of the cadres.”

“Her ethical and revolutionary behaviour is an example of a communist militant for everyone,” he said of her dismissal from her post.

Marbán González, newly elected, has a degree in History and Accounting and Finance and has held several positions as a political leader in the regime.

She was an advertising copywriter for the company Geocuba and a commercial manager and marketing director. In the Delegation of the Ministry of Audit and Control she was an auditor, delegate and later chief comptroller of the Provincial Comptroller’s Office of Havana.

Gladys Bejerano, some problematic statements

In May, in an interview given to EFE by Gladys Bejerano, the official addressed the corruption case of former Economy Minister Alejandro Gil.

“It hurts and it hurts a lot because one thinks as a colleague – and the people, as Cubans – that a person who has been at that level, who has been handling the situations, the sacrifices that have had to be made… That he does not have an attitude in correspondence, one really feels it as a betrayal, as something that is not correct, and that is how we all feel. But there is morality and there is courage to face it,” declared the official.

Bejerano referred to the incident as “a sadly negative lesson” from which “lessons” could be drawn. He also took the opportunity to threaten the private sector.

The official was proud that the corruption case had been made public and said that all the information would be made available in due time.

He also exclaimed: “People do not fall into corruption by parachute. It is a process: corruption is decomposition. It is a process of loss of values, of self-esteem, of self-respect (…). There are others who do it because of self-sufficiency, vanity, arrogance,” and he acknowledged the deficiencies of the control apparatus that he leads.

“The controls are not up to par,” he said after admitting that 23% of the country’s control systems have deficiencies, mainly due to a lack of technical or human capacity, and that only 60% of the positions in the Comptroller’s Office are filled.
