MÉRIDA, Mexico -. The Cuban playwright Nelson Dorr, 2011 National Theater Prize winner, died this Sunday in Havana at the age of 84.
The National Council of the Performing Arts mourned the death of whom it described as “one of our fundamental playwrights.”
His remains will be cremated and his funeral services will be held soon, the official note announces.
Nelson, brother of the playwright Nicolás Dorr who died in 2018, “directed more than 90 productions and was a screenwriter for film, ballet and dance,” the obituary states.
He was born Nelson César Dorremocea Udaeta in Havana on July 31, 1939. He started at the University Theater with a production The parakeetsa work of his brother.
In 1961, he created the Conjunto de Los Trece group and then went on to work at the National Dramatic Ensemble, as assistant to the Argentine director Néstor Raimondi.
Among his most remembered shows, the note of Cubaescena mentions Tosca (Luigi Illica, Giuseppe Giacosa y Giacomo Puccini, 1965), The Tragedy of King Christopher (Aimé Cesaire, 1966), The true story of Pedro Navaja (Pablo Cabrera and Rubén Blades, 1992 and 2006).
His director catalog features Cuban authors such as Virgilio Piñera, Abelardo Estorino and Alberto Pedro, as well as classics by Shakespeare or Brecht.
He was vice president of the Association of Performing Artists of the state UNEAC and president of its Musical Theater Section.
