Cubamax in the spotlight

MADRID, Spain.- In its last regular meeting, the Council of Hialeah, the city with the largest Cuban population in the United States, unanimously approved two resolutions that seek to limit the influence of the Havana regime in southern Florida. The measures, promoted by Councilor Bryan Calvo and co-sponsored by Mayor Esteban Bovo, were approved in second reading this Tuesday, June 11.

As explained The New Herald, the first resolution prohibits the city from awarding contracts, public funds and subsidies to companies that facilitate recreational travel and vacations in Cuba. This provision aims to prevent municipal resources from benefiting businesses that promote tourism on the Island, which could strengthen the economy of the Cuban regime.

The second resolution censures the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for not informing local authorities about the recent visit of a Cuban delegation to Miami International Airport. The Council considers that this omission constitutes a lack of respect and transparency towards local authorities and a violation of the right to information.

During the meeting of the city’s legislative body, Councilman Bryan Calvo expressed his motivation behind these resolutions, specifically mentioning the company Cubamax. “What motivates this resolution is the business that we see in our community under the name of Cubamax, specialized in shipping packages to Cuba and that coordinates trips to the Island,” Calvo explained. And he pointed out that the owners of Cubamax, Hugo Cancio and Carlos Trujillo, have shown support for the Cuban regime through various actions and associations.

It is worth remembering that Hugo Cancio is known for doing business with the regime. He has dedicated most of his business life to that: from charter trips in the nineties to e-commerce more recently (he is the owner of Katapulk), organizing concerts by Cuban musicians, managing telephone recharges and the offer of tourist tours.

Although the resolution does not directly mention Cubamax, Calvo stressed that its objective is to “make it clear that there is a brutal dictatorship in Cuba and that the Hialeah Council will take hostile measures against businesses that align with the Cuban government.”

Councilman Calvo reaffirmed the Council’s position: “We are not willing to make concessions or changes to city codes to benefit these types of businesses and allow them to expand and grow.” In addition, he requested that the resolution be included in the resolution that the City “will deny any privilege or concession that requires its approval to businesses linked to the Havana regime, whenever the law allows it.”

These resolutions were reached after Cubamax requested local authorities to maintain an illuminated sign that violated city codes. The company requested authorization to install an advertising LED screen in its premises located on 12th Avenue in Hialeah, but the city denied permission and took the opportunity to further examine this and other businesses that have commercial ties with the Cuban Government.

Founded in Hialeah in 2021, Cubamax Travel has expanded its presence through branches in various states of the United States, including California, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Miami-Dade, Broward, West Palm Beach, Orlando, Tampa, Cape Coral , Naples, Kissimmee, Key West, Los Cayos and Puerto Rico, according to its website.
