SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- The Cuban regime rejected 31 recommendations of the Human Rights Council, issued by more than 15 countries.
In a press release from the Cuban Observatory for Human Rights (OCDH), it emerged that among the rejected proposals were the release of political prisoners, guaranteeing medical care for imprisoned opponents or ending arbitrary detentions.
The observations were made in the context of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the UN Human Rights Council.
Countries such as New Zealand, Germany and Lithuania urged the Cuban government to release political prisoners and prisoners of conscience, and others called for transparent judicial processes and the end of the one-party system.
“The regime accepted 292 recommendations and took note of 41. We do not want to downplay this, but the 31 not accepted constitute a clear amendment to many others with which it said it agreed, which is a prelude to the usual non-compliance,” he wrote. the OCDH.
The regime claims to accept recommendations related to the ratification of the International Human Rights Covenants. Among these are the proposal by Italy, Slovenia and Zambia to consider ratifying the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
However, it will not relent in harassment and arbitrary arrests against civil society, human rights defenders and independent journalists. Likewise, it does not undertake to guarantee fair judicial processes.
Rejected recommendations
The refusal to “guarantee the necessary medical care to imprisoned political opponents” is worrying, when many have seen their health worsen in prison and some have died as a result.
Among those not accepted are also the suggestion to reform or repeal the articles of the Penal Code that pursue the full exercise of freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association.
Nor did it consider introducing the necessary modifications in the legislation to remove the jurisdiction of military courts to try civilians, a recommendation from Montenegro.
But it also did not take into account, as the US proposed, ending its one-party system to allow the holding of truly free and fair elections.
