Four Czech clubs in the main phase of European cups? It wasn’t here yet! But the mathematical predictions are not so positive now. Sparta, Pilsen and Mladá Boleslav are said to be roaring in the new league format…
Forget the traditional groups of four, starting this year, for the first time, the Champions League with the European and Conference Leagues are played within one big table. At first glance, the system looks unfair – after all, each team was assigned different opponents. And according to computer analysis, the Czech teams really got it!
The hardest lot
Especially Sparta Prague, which after 19 endless years will look to the Champions League. The lottery gave her a trip to Manchester City, for example, but also the champion of Italy (Inter Milan) or Germany (Leverkusen). “Only the French PSG has produced heavier juices,” announced the analysis server Opta.
This is also predicted to be reflected in the results. Football mathematicians performed 10,000 match simulations and Letenští are said to score just over eight points on average. But this is not nearly enough to progress to spring. “At least nine points must be obtained for the last promotion 24th place. In that case, you have a 77% chance of progressing,” the statisticians from the Football Meets Data association found.
Football vs. science
They predict the end of the league phase in EL Plzeň (nine points won will still not be enough) and in KL also Mladá Boleslav (should finish in the first non-promotional place). The stitchers can smile, the computer awarded Slavia a luxurious 14 points, which means even attacking the elite eight, which slips directly into the round of 16!
“As far as the players, coaches, clubs and stadiums are concerned, it’s great for us,” said coach Jindřich Trpišovský after the draw. Now all that remains is for Slavia to fulfill the computer prediction and for the remaining Czech trefoil to show that even science can be beaten on the grass!
