What is Croup?
It is an acute respiratory disease, also known as obstructive laryngitis, and is caused by a virus called parainfluenza type A, This is one of the best known. However, also there is a croup that has an allergic component -Sporadic croup- which is less common with viral croup.
According to the Pediatric doctor, Thomas Felipe Díaz Angarita, Coordinator of the Pediatric Service of the San José Children’s University Hospital, This disease has a higher incidence in minorssince they have more upper and lower respiratory infections, this being one of the most recurring reasons for consultation with the doctor.
As it is, the children most likely to have this disease are infants. “It occurs between three and six months, although it can be seen at any age,” explains the pediatrician.
It also mentions that there is a greater predisposition to suffer from this type of disease in boys than in girls: «It predominates more in the male sex than in the female sex, and that happens not only with croup but with all respiratory diseases,” he adds.
Although there are no exact figures for this disease in minors in Colombia, the pediatrician assures that “we are seeing at this time with the rainy season and the months that we have had on average, among all the respiratory diseases, 60% of the pediatric population that may suffer from this or another disease«.
