Cross-border ban is not a deterrent: “I don’t see it reflected in sales figures”

From today it is possible to purchase fireworks again. Even though cutting them is prohibited in Amsterdam this year – there has been a cutting ban since last year – that doesn’t stop many people from buying in bulk.

“Last year was the first year it was no longer allowed. I don’t see this reflected in the sales figures,” says fireworks seller Jeffrey Beekhoven. In 2022 it achieved its best turnover in the last 35 years. Beekhoven still expects many customers in the next three days.

Crossing ban

While fireworks are allowed in most places in the country around New Year’s Eve from 6pm to 2am, in Amsterdam they are banned. The cutting ban was imposed by the municipality due to serious accidents that occurred on New Year’s Eve from 2019 to 2020. But due to the corona years, the cutting ban only came into force in 2022.

What else can be cut? Only fireworks of the lightest category, F1, also known as children’s fireworks. Think stars, crackers and crackers.

But many Amsterdam customers also leave the Beekhoven store with top-class fireworks. Despite the stricter regulations. “Last year I couldn’t shoot off fireworks. Yet many fireworks were shooting into the air,” explains a visitor. “Because everyone does it, I think: it’s possible!”

And Beekhoven agrees with this. “As long as I can sell, there will be fireworks.”
