Pepe’s tears rolled down his cheeks as Portugal were knocked out of Euro 2024 in the quarter-finals. It is almost certain to be the last international competition for the former Real Madrid man who has 143 caps for his national team.
In 17 years with Portugal, Pepe has won two trophies including Euro 2016 when his team beat France 1-0. This year, he broke the record for the oldest player to appear at Euro 2024.
Euro 2024 will also be captain Ronaldo’s final international appearance, who confirmed the news after Slovenia’s win earlier this week, but was left in tears after missing a penalty in the first half of extra time that would have almost certainly secured Portugal’s place in the quarter-finals.
Luckily for Ronaldo, Portugal went on to win the penalty shootout, securing their place in the next round. As he did against Slovakia, Ronaldo successfully converted the first penalty in the shootout against France, but it was not enough to advance to the semi-finals. Instead, France will face Spain in the semi-finals, with the match kicking off at 8pm BST at the Allianz Arena in Munich.
