Cricket: Matthew Wade reprimanded for breaching ICC Code of Conduct against England

Cricket: Australia’s veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade has been reprimanded by the International Cricket Council for his aggressive argument with umpires. Wade, while batting against England in Barbados in the team’s previous match in the T20 World Cup 2024. Wade, batting in the final stages of the first innings, was defending a delivery from Adil Rashid. Wade was backing away just before the ball was bowled but eventually decided to defend when Rashid came after him. After the umpire ruled the incident as a dot ball, Wade got furious and argued with the umpires that it should have been ruled a dead ball as he did not intend to play the ball.

According to the ICC, the wicketkeeper-batsman was found to have breached Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an International Match”.

In addition, one demerit point was added to Wade’s disciplinary record. This was his first offence in a period of 24 months. On-field umpires Nitin Menon and Joel Wilson, third umpire Asif Yaqoob and fourth umpire Jayaraman Madangopal laid the charges.

Formal hearing There was no need for a umpire as Wade admitted the offence and accepted the penalty proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. In the end, Australia won the match comfortably. Defending champions England were handed a crushing defeat by 2021 champions Australia in the biggest encounter of Group B at the T20 World Cup 2024. Playing at Kensington Oval in Barbados, Australia made a big impact by not only becoming the first team to cross the 200-run barrier in the tournament but also by giving Jos Buttler’s side an epic choke in the middle overs,

England secured the bragging rights. Chasing 202 against Australia, England could only manage 165 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in their registered 20 overs. This means that England now have no wins from their first 2 matches in the tournament, and now need to win their last two matches against Namibia and Oman to qualify for the Super 8 stages. England have been in trouble after rain washed out their first match against Scotland, which led to both teams sharing the points.
