Crete: A teacher tied an 8-year-old student to a chair with duct tape

An unimaginable incident happened in Heraklion, Crete, and specifically in the primary school of Mastaba, where a teacher decided to “comply” an 8-year-old student by tying him to a chair.

As the child’s mother complained to cretalive, the teacher allegedly tied the child to the chair with tape because he was not smart, while saying that this would lead to “compliance and learning boundaries within the classroom.”

What happened

The little boy talked about the incident, days later, to his mother, by chance, and she informed the social worker.

The social worker then, according to the report, informed the Directorate of Primary Education of Heraklion Prefecture and the Directorate of Primary Education requested an explanation from the school.

According to the information, the school allegedly claimed that there was nothing they could do but because the social worker insisted, they are looking into the matter again.

The teacher, however, spoke to the mother on the phone and told her that it happened once and it won’t happen again. However, he reportedly told the mother that the matter should not go to extremes and that the child’s behavior stems from the family environment.

What does the Directorate of Primary Education support?

For his part, the Head of the Directorate of Primary Education of Heraklion Prefecture, Manolis Beladakis, told the same source that he was informed by the publication about the incident and contacted the school immediately, claiming that he had absolutely no knowledge of the incident before.

Mr. Beladakis emphasized that he will proceed with an investigation into what really happened, however, as he said, in a communication he had with the school management, he was informed that such a thing never happened and that it was a theatrical event.

He added that the social services and the school psychologist immediately took charge of the matter, while in the past, the mother had been asked for a more general information, without this being done.
