Larian Studios’ games, which includes 2023 “Game of the Year” Baldur’s Gate 3, will not be available on any game subscription service. This is what Larian founder and CEO Swen Vincke says on X.

The move came as a summary of several posts on the platform. These were obviously intended as some sort of response to Ubisoft’s director of subscriptions, Philippe Tremblay, who earlier this week believed that players will have to get used to subscribing to games.

Redd for and “monopoly subscriptions”

Not everyone agrees that the future of gaming means everyone will have to buy a subscription service, and Vincke is now one of those spreading the word.

He understandably points out that games with adequate quality content will suffer in a world where subscription models dominate and a small group at the subscription service can decide what should or should not go to market.

So it is unlikely that anyone will choose to bet on games from idealistic developers with experimental content. The new games will instead aim for maximum profit, Vincke says.

The Como manager therefore believes that games should preferably go directly from the developer to the players. At the same time, he also says he respects another choice for developers who see subscription services as a real opportunity to make their own game.

Are game subscriptions the future?
