The squatters announced this evening that they have been living in some former prostitution premises in the red light district for several days. They say they express their solidarity with the sex workers who are fighting against the arrival of erotic centers in the South.
These are the windows in the Sint Annenkwartier, which is located between Sint Annenstraat, Sint Jansstraat, Warmoesstraat and Oudezijds Voorburgwal. A spokesperson for the squatters’ group says the yet-to-be-built erotic center in the South “is in reality an erotic prison.”
People with money
“If we leave it to the mayor, the red light district will soon look just like Nine Streets: a clean shopping mall for people with money,” says the squatter. “We don’t accept it, and that’s why we will sabotage every step towards the erotic center.”
According to the squatters’ group, the windows have been empty for almost two years and are owned by a real estate company. The squatters want to turn it into a meeting place for prostitutes.
The protest march
In recent years, the erotic center project has already attracted criticism from various groups, including some prostitutes. They have organized several protest marches and said they do not want to be moved.
Since the squatters were not caught red-handed, they probably will not be evicted for the time being. This usually requires a declaration from the owner and this declaration is then assessed by the Public Prosecutor.
This evening the police have not yet been able to say whether they are already aware of the occupation.
