Crack in the railway embankment: fewer trains traveling more slowly between Dordrecht and Gorinchem

January 11, 2024

A crack has appeared in the Gorinchem railway embankment. The fissure is about 65 meters long and half a meter deep in some places. How the crack occurred is being investigated. To ensure safety, trains can only travel at a speed of 40 km/h on this section of track. Due to this measure, only two trains per hour can temporarily run between Dordrecht and Gorinchem instead of four.

Measuring equipment

«It is not yet clear how long it will last. We find this very annoying for travellers, but we want to ensure safety. ProRail specialists are working on a short-term solution. Unfortunately, completely repairing the tear will likely take longer. We install measuring instruments to monitor safety,” says Martijn de Graaf, spokesperson for ProRail.

Less and more slowly

So there are fewer trains per hour and they travel more slowly in the location in question. We recommend using a travel planner before departure.
