Covid-19 cases increase in Puerto Rico | Present

This is stated in the latest report published by the Department of Health on the covid-19 situation on the island high incidence of infections in Puerto Rico in the final period of last year.

According to the incidence indicator, as of December 30, Puerto Rico had a substantial level of community transmission, with a rate of 80.33 covid cases reported per 100,000 inhabitants. However, according to the report, The highest level was observed on December 20, with a rate of 81.76 per 100,000 inhabitants.

The report also explains that Puerto Rico has an increasing positivity trend, with an estimated value of 22.47% as of December 30, 2023. Therefore, the level of community transmission is high.

Almost the entire island remains at a high level of contagion.▲

Precisely, 66 municipalities are at a high contagion level, while 10 remain at a substantial level and 2 at a moderate level.

“The health region with the highest percentage of positivity was Fajardo with 28.95%. Instead, the health region with the lowest percentage was Ponce, with 17.68%,” the report reads.

Likewise, The age group with the highest positivity recorded was 30-39 years old.

Most affected municipalities

From 24 to 30 December 2023, The region with the highest rate of reported cases was the municipality of Bayamón with 92.02 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. As well as, preliminarily, lThe region with the highest mortality rate was Mayagüez with 0.84 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.

In that period, 8 deaths from covid were recorded and 82 hospitalized across the island.

However, there is an increase in virus reinfections; cases in which people, after becoming infected and recovering, contract the virus again.

According to the Department of Health report, the reinfection rate is 60 per 100,000 inhabitants.
