Cosmonaut Kononenko set a world record for the total time spent in space – 2024-02-08 10:29:00





“Roscosmos” cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko working on the International Space Station (ISS) has set a world record for the total duration of space flights.

As Interfax reports, at 11:30:08 Moscow time, Kononenko surpassed compatriot Gennady Padalka’s achievement, who accumulated 878 days, 11 hours, 29 minutes, and 48 seconds during five space flights.

Kononenko, who is the commander of the Roscosmos cosmonaut squadron, is making his fifth space flight. After the end of the current campaign (as planned on September 23, 2024), Kononenko’s total time in space will be 1,110 days.

Oleg Kononenko was born on June 21, 1964 in Charzow, Turkmen SSR. In 1988, he graduated from the Aviation Institute named after Zhukovsky in Kharkiv, majoring in “Engines of aircraft” with the qualification of “engineer-mechanic”. From 1996 to 1998, he underwent general space training at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. In March 1998, he was awarded the “test cosmonaut” qualification. Kononenko made the first space flight on April 8, 2008 as part of the 17th main ISS expedition, returning to Earth on October 24, 2008.
