In an area with low seismicity, the focus was noted by the Director of Geodynamic Research Athanasios Ganas, who appeared reassuring about the 4.7 Richter
Reassuring about the 4.7 Richter earthquake, which woke up the residents of Corfu this Friday (22/3) in the morning, appeared the director of research at the Geodynamic Institute Athanasios Ganas.
“We have a weak seismic vibration in the underwater area” specifically stated Ath. Ganas, speaking to ERT. “It is about 18 kilometers southeast of Othonou. It is in the northern Ionian. There is no known fault there. The rift that exists and we know it is a little closer to Corfu. It’s a sequence that started two days ago. We have several small earthquakes and this morning there was a 4.7 magnitude earthquake followed by a 3.4 magnitude aftershock,” he explained.
“It’s not a cause for concern this sequence. But still, because it is one area that has low seismicityevery activity there arouses our interest to see how it will develop” he noted.
To the question if it was the main earthquake the geodynamic research director replied: “We don’t have enough evidence yet. It may perhaps follow. Now, since 4.7 is on the weak-strong vibration boundary, we’ll see. We want some more data. It is an area, we do not know it well because it is in the middle of the northern Ionian between Greece and Italy and we don’t have a lot of earthquakes, so we want a little more data to see how it goes.”
