The head of Russian diplomacy traveled to New York this week for a session of the UN Security Council. There he not only delivered a defiant speech about Ukraine full of propaganda phrases, but also met with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. The cordial handshake that the two politicians exchanged did not go unnoticed in the comments.
According to the official statement, Guterres and Lavrov held a meeting where they “discussed several aspects related to the war in Ukraine. They also discussed the future summit and host country issues.”
This was not the first meeting between the two politicians since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Recall that immediately after the outbreak of the war, Guterres visited Moscow, where he spoke not only with Lavrov, but also with Putin. Then the gentlemen met at sessions of the Security Council or the United Nations General Assembly. Last September, during one such meeting, Lavrov sent Guterres a video message from a student from occupied Luhansk, in which she presented a vision of the “Nazi regime in Kiev.” The UN Secretary General also received a book on the “crimes of Ukraine” from Lavrov.
The war in Ukraine continues. The Russians mercilessly bomb cities and civilian infrastructure, and women and children die every day as a result of these attacks. When Ukraine responds with the attack, Moscow raises a cry on the international forum, accusing Kiev of what it has been doing for two years.
However, this did not stop the UN Secretary General from meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister and warmly shaking his hand, which was caught on camera.
“INCREDIBLE (incredible – ed.)” – wrote the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Gabrielius Landsbergis, on his Twitter profile, commenting on this fact on his profile on the X platform. He wrote the first two letters in capital letters, emphasizing that it is of the UN (UN in English).
Many experts dealing with Russia reacted to the photos and recordings after this meeting, including Robert Pszczel, former Polish diplomat, director of the NATO Information Office in Moscow, currently chief specialist of the Security and Defense Group of the Center for Russian Studies oriental.
“Also imprudent and unethical. The UN Charter does not oblige the UN Secretary General to meet (with honors) a loyal servant of an autocrat accused of war crimes. Such an act could have been avoided – unfortunately, it leads a bad reputation to the company. the organization already weakened,” Pszczel said.
“A video appeared in the Russian media in which Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and UN Secretary General António Guterres shake hands,” Anton Gerashchenko, advisor to the Ukrainian Interior Minister, wrote on his profile. “How is it possible for a representative of a murderous terrorist state to be accepted at the highest level of the United Nations?” – asks Gerashchenko.
“The worst of the United Nations and many other international institutions in one picture,” said Garry Kasparov, world chess champion in 1985-1993, potential presidential candidate of Russia in 2008, leader of the United Civic Front.
