Qatar, Egypt and the United States (US) are still mediators between the two conflicting parties to reach a ceasefire agreement.
Terms from Israel
According to Barak Ravid of AxiosIsrael’s proposal was a ceasefire in exchange for the release of hostages and talks on the “restoration of sustainable calm” in Gaza.
In recent days, Hamas has also released several live videos of hostages expected to be exchanged at some point during the deal — which could increase domestic political pressure on Israel, where the return of the hostages is a strong issue.
The “sustained calm” narrative suggests a solution short of the “total victory” repeatedly touted by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has vowed to eliminate Hamas.
Conditions from Hamas
Interestingly, this also reflects a ceasefire proposal from senior Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya.
According to reports The Guardian on Monday (29/4/2024), he floated the idea of “hudna”, a diction used in Islamic jurisprudence to describe a kind of long-term ceasefire or “sustainable calm”.
However, the messages resulting from these negotiations were very contradictory.
Although Qatar, which represents one mediation track, has spoken openly about its frustration over the stalled talks, there has been more activity in recent days around the Egypt-Israel talks — a forum that has produced ceasefires in previous conflicts.
