Consumer, Purchase of electricity | Several complaints about Elkjøp: – We are aware that some people feel cheated

(Nettavisen): Robin Özkan is one of many who told Nettavisen about his experience at Elkjøp.

Believing that with the purchase he would get a discount and a free subscription to a streaming service, Özkan’s purchase turned out to be more expensive than he had been promised.

Several Nettavisen spoke out saying they were offered a discount on their purchase, as well as free subscription for several months with Viaplay and TV 2 Play with Elkjøp. Some are offered a free subscription with Allente, but not everyone is told that this is an Allente subscription they are signing up for.

Not long after customers sign up for a free trial, they receive an invoice and information that they are tied to Allente for six months.

Elkjøp tells Nettavisen that they are aware of the problem.

– Simply a deception

Özkan reportedly bought a dishwasher on offer in Elkjøp in October. A salesman offered me even more discounts on the dishwasher, as well as six months of free subscription to a streaming service. He didn’t know it was Allente he was signing.

– I asked how much it would cost, he said it was free. He said I would be free for six months, then there would be bills and I could resign after six months, Özkan tells Nettavisen.

The offer seemed good and Özkan accepted. But not long after, he received an invoice from Allente in the mail.

Anders had canceled his Premier League season ticket. Then a letter arrived in the mail

– After two weeks a large invoice arrived and I thought I had been deceived, says Özkan.

He tried to contact Allente’s customer service for two days, where he finally got through to a customer service representative. It was not possible to cancel the subscription, but he received a slight discount on the monthly amount, of around NOK 180.

– There are probably many who fall into this trap, without asking more or getting more information. Elkjøp are great, I think it’s very cynical of them, Özkan tells Nettavisen.

Don’t shop in Elkjøp anymore

It is not difficult to find complaints from customers who feel cheated by Elkjøp. After Nettavisen wrote about Allente’s customers struggling to unsubscribe from the streaming provider, more stories came.

“The receptionist said that I would receive a discount of NOK 1,500 if I accepted and that I could come to Elkjøp Alnabru when I received the first invoice from Allente.”

“I don’t understand what Elkjøp is trying to achieve with this kind of behavior.”

“I bought a PS5 this summer in Elkjøp and was offered a discount in exchange for tying it to TV 2 sumo and Viaplay for 6 months, but they said nothing about the fact that Allente was the supplier and that it included a TV package. “

Eva Dagen Eek tells Nettavisen that she also fell into the same trap in Elkjøp.

NRK: At least 52 Nav users were scammed out of a total of 1.3 million Norwegian kroner

She says she was offered to play TV 2 and Viaplay for free for six months, and received no explanation that she would then have to switch from Altiboks, which she already had, to Allente.

Eek found out the next day that he had signed with Allente for six months which were not free. The same day he tried to cancel the subscription, but it didn’t work.

– Very confusing and I was very busy that day. Shop at Power from now on, writes Eek to Nettavisen.

Usual complaint to the Consumer Council

The Consumer Council is well aware of the problem, not necessarily with Elkjøp, but with several other companies. Thomas Iversen, a consumer law attorney at the Consumer Council, says this poor communication is a common phenomenon among them.

This is a fairly common complaint they receive, where customers are offered something for free but it turns out it costs money. However, it is not necessary that this is done illegally, but that the customer himself did not pay enough attention and realized that the item will cost money.

In this case where people say that Elkjøp never mentioned the binding agreement that costs NOK 300 per month, Iversen is clear that Elkjøp is breaking the law.

– If something is marketed as free, then it must be free. It should be very clear if we move on to no longer being free, Iversen tells Nettavisen.

He adds that it is perfectly legal to offer something for free, because it will then cost money, but that this needs to be clarified.

Elkjøp is aware of customer complaints

– We are unfortunately aware that some customers have not received sufficient information and may have felt deceived when entering into such an agreement with us. We deeply regret this, writes Martin Stenvoll Pedersen, deputy sales director at Elkjøp, in an email to Nettavisen.

They encourage any other customers who regret entering into such an agreement to contact Elkjøp and the store where they made their purchases directly.

– To avoid similar experiences, we have taken measures during the autumn to clarify the content of the agreement and improve the information flow between seller and customer, writes Pedersen to Nettavisen.
