Conmebol sanctioned five Uruguayan footballers

The Disciplinary Commission of Conmebol sanctioned the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) Several players from the Uruguayan national team have already been arrested for the incidents that occurred with Colombian fans during the semi-final of the Copa America 2024.

Among the sanctions imposed, the AUF received a financial fine, while eleven Uruguayan players were also fined and five of them faced sporting suspensions. These punishments directly affect the participation of the ‘Celeste’ in the upcoming dates of the South American Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.

Who are the suspended players?

Ronald Araújo, Jose Maria Gimenez and Mathias Olivera were suspended for three games, which will prevent them from playing against Paraguay, Venezuela and PeruIn addition, Araújo is still in the process of recovering from a thigh injury that will keep him out for several months. Rodrigo Bentancur received a four-match suspensionwhich keeps him out of the same matches plus the confrontation against Ecuador.
