CNE postpones decision on Petro campaign investigation – 2024-09-17 06:27:17 – 2024-09-17 06:30:12

He National Electoral Council (CNE) has not yet made a final decision on the motion requesting charges be brought against President Gustavo Petro and an investigation opened into his 2022 presidential campaign.

The most recent session of the CNE, held last Friday, left unresolved the issue of the alleged violation of campaign limits.

The situation revolves around a request for an investigation that has generated great expectations. Judge Alba Lucia Velasquez, Known for her closeness to the Historic Pact, she requested the rotation of the file, which implies that the case will be assigned to a new magistrate for analysis.

This request has been accepted, but the decision on whether to proceed with the investigation and lay charges has been postponed until 30 September, when the magistrates will meet again to try to reach a decision.

During the session, the CNE also addressed other aspects of the case. First, it discussed a document that was presented during the meeting, which did not meet the legal requirements to be considered a formal challenge. The author of the document was therefore required to make the necessary adjustments.

Secondly, the request for suspension requested by Petro’s campaign defense, based on a petition for nullity and/or clarification submitted to the Council of State, was denied. This request was intended to challenge the CNE’s decision regarding the conflict of powers.
