Maintaining a relationship of equality and collaboration between the United States and Mexico, was the interest expressed by the candidate-elect for the Presidency of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, after holding a meeting with Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, advisor for National Security of the government of President Joe Biden, and with whom he shared part of his vision on public security, economy and migration, says a statement.
“We talked about the importance of the commercial relationship between Mexico and the United States as commercial partners, moving forward, our relationship will obviously begin on the 1st. October, of our interest in continuing to collaborate based on the Bicentennial Understanding, as has been done now with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his cabinet, which has allowed high-level meetings to be held on all topics, from economic issues, security, migration and our interest is to continue carrying out this relationship based on this Bicentennial Understanding, which allows a relationship of equality and collaboration between both countries,” he reported.
He explained that during the meeting – which lasted about an hour and in which the United States ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, was present – issues were also addressed such as Mexico’s interest in addressing measures to end arms trafficking in border.
“We spoke in general, without evidently any agreement, but simply an informal conversation, about trade issues, security issues, migration, the issues that also interest us, the entry of weapons from the United States to Mexico,” he added. .
Likewise, he reported that President Biden’s National Security Advisor, Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, also recognized her triumph for being the first female President of Mexico, but also the only female ruler in North America.
“We also talk about women’s issues. She is a very important woman in the United States, she congratulated me on her victory in Mexico and on the importance of having a female President for the first time not only in Mexico, but in all of North America,” she highlighted.
In response to questions from the media, Claudia Sheinbaum stated that this meeting was a first approach, without agreements on the issues they addressed, although she recalled her vision on issues such as security, where the strategy is to address the causes and end impunity.
Regarding migration, he reported that the US advisor delivered a printed document with the immigration policy proposed by President Joe Biden.
“They presented us with a document that President Biden prepared on migration issues, which is called: ‘The authentic hemispheric approach to migration cooperation.’ They gave us a printed presentation and up to that point, there was no agreement, no further situation, but simply talking about the different issues,” he noted.
He recalled that the vision of his Nation Project is to address the causes also in terms of migration, mainly, to detonate the economic development of the southern border to prevent migrants from leaving their place of origin and seeking better conditions in the north of the continent.
Finally, she reported that at this meeting she was accompanied by Dr. Juan Ramón de la Fuente, coordinator of the Transition work and who directed the Transformation Dialogues; and Omar García Harfuch, senator-elect and former Secretary of Citizen Security in Mexico City.
