Classes resume in municipalities surrounding the Agua volcano

He Ministry of Education (Mineduc) confirmed that as of this Tuesday, February 27, classes resumed for students from the official, private and cooperative sectors in the municipalities of Saint Mary of Jesus and Saint John Alotenangoin the department of Sacatepequez.

The presence of children and adolescents in classrooms has been suspended since last week due to the impact of the large-scale forest fire that occurred on the Agua volcano, which has consumed nearly 50 hectares of forest.

Through a statement, the ministry explained that, in the face of the environmental emergency, the Risk Management Committee for School Safety of the Departmental Directorate of Education of Sacatepéquez remains active.

“The current situation has been monitored to protect the integrity of the students and, after the evaluation, it is reported that classes will resume on Tuesday,” the document stated.

He added that, in response to what is happening, it is requested to pay attention to the information from the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred), local authorities and the official media of the educational institution.

Work continues to control fire in volcano in Sacatepéquez

The Guatemalan authorities reported yesterday that the forest fire on the Agua volcano has been extinguished by 30%, after five days of operations to control the emergency.

Conred spokesperson, Rodolfo García, declared that the fire, which started last Wednesday in Agua, located in the west of the country, is 60% controlled.

García added that for fire control tasks, more than 48 thousand gallons of water have been used in aerial and ground tasks.

The different response brigades continue to fight the fire on the slopes of the colossus, 3,760 meters high, located in the municipality of Santa María de Jesús, in the department of Sacatepéquez

In the last eight days, Guatemala has registered more than 35 forest fires throughout the territory and as of yesterday at least 27 of them were still active, the same source said.

During the 2023-2024 fire season, which began last November, Conred records 469 incidents, 331 of them forest fires, which have consumed 1,377 hectares of forests.
