The Israeli army announced on Tuesday that it had opened fire on around twenty “suspects”, alleged drug traffickers, who were heading towards southern Israel from neighboring Egypt.

“A few moments ago, around twenty suspects, many of them armed, arrived from Egyptian territory towards the border area with Israel, near the Nitzana border post,” in the Negev desert, the army said in a short message to the press.
“Soldiers operating in the area opened fire on the armed individuals and the suspects were hit,” the army added, without specifying the toll.
In Cairo, an Egyptian security source told al-Qahera News TV that Egyptian forces had foiled a drug trafficking attempt at the Israel-Egypt border in the same area.
According to this source, clashes occurred during the anti-drug operation and six traffickers were arrested.
The border between the two countries is generally calm, although it is regularly the scene of drug trafficking attempts, which in recent years have led to firefights between smugglers and Israeli soldiers stationed there.
