Civil Protection prepares for first rains

The director of Civil Protection, Luis Alonso Amaya, stated this Thursday that they are preparing for the arrival of the first rains and have moved forward with mitigation work through the 2024 Winter Plan.

«We must remember that the first storms are concentrated in mountainous areas, high areas; Be careful, you have to take care of cleaning drains so as not to have critical incidents,” said the official.

Amaya emphasized that every time they design a plan of this type, the climate perspective is considered. «For some, having a plan year after year is the same, the point is that there are some risk scenarios that are constant, for example, urban flooding. “San Salvador has lost hydraulic capacity for years.”

The head of Civil Protection explained that among the tasks they carry out are the cleaning of streams and streams “because we must remember that some streams are winter streams, in summer the flow is reduced; That is to say, weeds grow on the banks and in the first rains all of this is uprooted and creates blockages in the lower areas or basins. Another is the cleaning of some dams and canals,” he added.

Amaya stated that they work with the Threats Observatory of the Ministry of the Environment, which is the main source regarding meteorological systems. He said that the situation of upcoming rains is not so critical as to put some kind of alert, but he emphasized that the recommendations to the population are not superfluous.
