Once the calculations for the Presidency of Mexico were concluded, the Citizen Movement that governs Nuevo León and Jalisco, obtained more tickets than the PRI, which at least in the electoral trend for the top position makes it the third political force.
In the case of the federal senators and deputies, the distance in votes with the PRI, the historic party that governed Mexico for 70 years, is minimal. Which is where it ranks fourth.
This is a historic leap for a party that emerged in the late 90s first as the National Political Group, so after being granted registration, the national leader Dante Delgado, also the current leader of the Citizen Movement, was imprisoned.
the beginning
First emerged as Convergence for Democracy in 1999, it participated in the 2000 federal elections, when the electoral coalition Alianza por México, made up of the PRD, the PT, the Social Alliance Party and the Nationalist Society Party, nominated Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas for the presidency of the Republic. In its history, Convergencia stated that it came to the political scene to present itself as the “social democratic citizen option” and whose registration represented an effort to consolidate the party regime in Mexico.
social democracy
Its principles were based on renewed social democracy, which establishes “equality, equity, protection of the weak, freedom as autonomy, no right without responsibility, no authority without democracy, pluralism, respect for individual freedom, for choice.” personal, social justice and the defense of fundamental human rights.”
In short, it contains the values of the “third way” that opts neither for US market capitalism nor Soviet communism and instead seeks economic growth with social development, according to researcher Marcelo Daniel Prati, in a review of the book. by sociologist Anthony Giddens, called “The Third Way. The renewal of Social Democracy”.
The leader
The leader of MC, Dante Delgado, graduated from Law from the Universidad Veracruzana and has been a senator, deputy, federal, governor of Veracruz, deputy director of Fisheries, ambassador of Mexico in Italy, Albania and Malta; in addition to being an agrarian attorney.
He was imprisoned in 1996 and currently close to him have been implicated in the Segalmex corruption case.
The break with AMLO
Although Convergencia, then Movimiento Ciudadano, accompanied the now president López Obrador from his first campaign, the breakup occurred according to Dante Delgado after he “disknown” his former allies more than a decade ago.
This after disqualifying Delgado. In an interview with Adela Micha taken up by the Politico media, the Emecista leader declares “he has a special way of being, where he always ignores his former allies and he did it with us. Because Movimiento Ciudadano had given him everything he could give him.”
Growth
In 2018, the Citizen Movement, which was in alliance with the PAN and the PRD, obtained six senatorial seats by relative majority and 14 by first minority; while in federal deputies he obtained 62 seats.
Now, when competing alone, it grew 513 percent, going from receiving one million votes in 2018 to 6.2 in 2024.
In Congress, the party would have 55 deputies and 14 senators.
The national coordinator Dante Delgado offered a message this June 11 where he declared that the Citizen Movement was positioned as the fastest growing force in Mexico with the presidential candidacy of Jorge Álvarez Máynez.
“We grew up playing fair, we are the only force that respected electoral times, and we, respecting the law, had an exponential positioning of our candidate…” said Delgado.
He also highlighted the youth of his electorate, which consisted of millennials and centennials.
An analysis of voters by the Spanish newspaper El País describes that 21% of young people between 18 and 29 years old voted for Máynez, in contrast to those over 60 years old, which was only 2%.
The former ally of López Obrador expressed that MC “is the only force that represents a true political alternative against Morena.”
For her part, Laura Ballesteros, who was coordinator of the presidential campaign, criticized the current electoral rules, since despite obtaining more votes than the PRI, the PVEM and the PT, they received fewer deputies.
Adding that by surpassing the PRI by almost half a million votes, Movimiento can now be considered the third national political force.
The governorships
Existing as Convergencia until 2011, when they renewed themselves to become the Citizen Movement (MC), the party accompanied Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas in his presidential candidacy in 2000 and Andrés Manuel López Obrador in 2006 and 2012.
Forming alliances, he obtained his first governorships since the beginning of the 21st century and now his successor Citizen Movement governs two of the most important states in the country, Nuevo León and Jalisco.
