CHP Malatya Deputy Veli Ağbaba listened to the questions of barley and wheat producers in Malatya. Reacting to the 2024 grain prices of the Turkish Grain Board (TMO), Ağbaba said, “Everything is expensive, but the only thing that is required for farmers is a 25 kuruş increase per kilo. They increased 1 TL for wheat and 25 kuruş for barley. I guess the message here is ‘ “Farmers are told not to produce,” he said.
“I SOWED AND REACHED, I HAVE THE PROPERTY AND I CANNOT SELL IT”
Veli Ağbaba listened to the problems of the farmers he visited in the field. A farmer Ağbaba spoke to said, “We have nothing to make the workers miserable. The money we receive does not cover diesel fuel. It is not even enough for a cup of tea. There is no one who buys our product. TMO has set a quota. The soil crops office gave a raise of 25 kuruş. There is no way they can save diesel fuel or something.” Last year, diesel fuel was 20 lira, this year it has doubled, TMO has increased the price by 25 kuruş per kilo, our debts are piling up, we were able to make ends meet, but now we cannot do any of that. “I can’t even earn the money I worked day and night in the heat and cold. I planted and harvested, but I still have the goods and I can’t sell them, and TMO doesn’t buy them all,” he said.
Another farmer said, “I dropped out of two universities. I realized that I could not become anything after studying. I started doing this job, but farming is over. Neither planting nor harvesting crops makes money. I was going to be a combine harvester, but I gave up. The tire I bought for 40 thousand liras last year is 110 thousand liras this year.” ” he said.
“THE FARMER’S SWEAT IS WASTE”
Veli Ağbaba also said:
“Unfortunately, the figure announced by the Turkish Grain Board today is perceived as an insult to the peasants and farmers. One kilo of barley does not cost a tea. The purchase price of barley, which was 7 thousand liras per ton last year, was announced as 7 thousand 250 liras per ton this year. An increase of 250 liras has been made, according to TÜİK figures. According to the real figures, the price of 150 percent diesel fuel has increased from 18-19 liras to 45 liras. The price of fertilizer has increased twice as much, but it is only what is deemed affordable for farmers. The price increase is 25 kuruş per kilo. They increased the price by 1 TL for wheat and 25 kuruş for barley. The message given here is probably that farmers are importing products from Ukraine and are told to save money. I think when AKP came to power, farmers had a debt of 2.5 billion TL. Currently, farmers have a debt of 700 billion TL. They say 20 billion dollars have been paid for imports of agricultural products. While those who sow and reap cannot afford the sweat of their brow, imports are being made from Ukraine left and right. They say ‘We are national and local’, but there is no such thing as nationality or locality. Let their nationalism and localism be destroyed. We will hold a rally in Thrace. Our Chairman will bring this issue to the agenda. Unfortunately, the situation is really not encouraging. In the past, he was paying alimony for his family who had 50 decares, 100 decares of land and cultivated and harvested here. Now he can’t even cover his expenses, and his hard work is wasted.”
