The force is focusing on developing nuclear-powered submarines while also maintaining conventional vessels, an officer said Monday (17/6/2024).
Wen Xuexing, a captain in the PLA Navy’s submarine detachment, made the remarks in a report by China Central Television (CCTV) to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the PLA Navy’s submarine force.
Wen’s unit is the PLA Navy’s first submarine unit, which is also a submarine “seed unit” responsible for testing and training, according to CCTV.
“Now, the development of China’s submarine force includes both nuclear-powered and conventional vessels, with nuclear power being the main focus,” Wen said, noting China’s nuclear-powered submarines now patrol the seas regularly.
“We have achieved a historic breakthrough in terms of maritime verification of our torpedo attacks and missile attacks. This means our combat capabilities are stronger, we can cover farther areas, and we are more confident in our missions,” said Wen.
CCTV reports show a rare clip showing an active torpedo hitting the stern of a target ship, causing a powerful explosion that destroys the target ship.
“The PLA Navy’s submarines allow the Chinese people to develop their economy peacefully and not fear any invasion,” Wen said.
Submarine development and related operations are often considered sensitive in all navies around the world due to the stealth mission requirements, so the public tends not to know much about them.
However, a limited amount of public exposure could also serve as a deterrent, a Chinese military expert who requested anonymity told the Global Times on Monday.
“China’s submarine technology has long lagged behind the world’s top-level technology, but recent breakthroughs show it is starting to catch up,” the expert said.
According to media reports, the PLA Navy now operates Type 039 series conventional submarines, Type 09III nuclear-powered attack submarines, and Type 09IV nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines, with more advanced models being developed.
